Where: Myanmar (formally known as Burma) is located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, China, Laos, Bangladesh, and India, and is approximately the size of Texas. Christians in Myanmar are part of the persecuted church. Myanmar is primarily a Buddhist country and governed by a socialist military regime.
What We Do:
- Teach vacation Bible school at an orphanage
- Love and play with the children
- Teach at a Bible conference or seminary
- Assess the needs for present and future involvement, such as in agriculture sustainability and teaching vocational skills
- Assist with construction needs
- Encourage those who continue to fight persecution to raise the children in “training them up in the way of the Lord.” Prov. 22:6
Why: To help provide opportunity for formal, spiritual, and vocational education, so the future of Myanmar will be equipped to bring hope through Christ to what would be, without Christ, a hopeless situation.
When: February 2012
Who: Participants must be adults capable of making and being responsible for their own legal decisions, such as in medical emergencies and subsequent care or unlawful acts. Youth may participate if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Contribute by serving on the team as a teacher, teaching assistant, music/worship leader, activity planner, game leader.
Cost: Approximately $2,000 (covers airfare and group expenses). Participants are expected to generate financial support through support letters, individual and team fundraising. Guidance through this fundraising process is provided if needed. Individuals need to raise funds to cover 1) airfare ($1,600 - $2,000) and 2) any in-country expenses not covered by group fundraising. If all in-country expenses are covered (through team fundraising), then the individual only needs to cover airfare. Team fundraising goes towards in-country expenses. The $2,000 and participation in team fundraising includes: travel expenses, lodging, meals, airport tax and transportation. Does not include: laundry, gifts, personal shopping expenses, and passport and visa fees. Additional funds may have to be raised with rising fuel and food prices.
Once committed to joining the team:
- A passport is needed (if you do not have one, this will take 4-6 weeks to obtain. Application available at post office.)
- An itinerary needs to be obtained from airlines.
- A visa to gain entry into Myanmar must be obtained. (We usually do this as a group; it will take 2-4 weeks.)
- Airfare tickets purchased.
What you can do:
- Pray: For the people of Myanmar, and specifically the children and leaders at Agape and daughter orphanages. For the Lord to call and equip a team.
- Give: Books, clothes, crafts, curriculum for the trip. Financial support for the orphanages and for mission team members.
- Go: Be a part of the team and the amazing work God is doing in Myanmar.
